Dental Implant Chicago. Replace Missing Teeth
A dental implant can be thought of as an artificial tooth root that is submerged into the jawbone. When dental work such as a crown, fixed bridge, or a full set of dentures is added, one or more missing teeth can be replaced. A dental implant is fabricated from a very strong, biocompatible material placed in a simple procedure that, generally, is as convenient as a tooth extraction. After an initial healing period, during which the implant is buried in bone and left undisturbed under the gum tissue, it is uncovered and connected to a small metal post that secures and supports the artificial tooth.
The implant material is extremely biocompatible. The bone grows to the implant and bonds to it. This makes the implant very strong. The process is called ‘osseointegration’. A dental implant is essentially a new tooth’ inserted into a tooth gap. Offering a beautiful and natural look, implants are becoming increasingly popular for patients looking for a complete smile, and an alternative to dentures. Whereas dentures can be uncomfortable, and easy to break and lose, dental implants offer greater durability and convenience for patients.
If you are looking for a natural-looking and long-term solution to missing teeth, dental implants are the way to go. The dental implant procedure is done in two parts:
- First, an artificial root made of titanium is inserted into the jaw and left for around three to four months for the bone to fuse with the new root. Titanium is used because of the extremely low body-rejection rates – titanium is a common metal for artificial implants
- Then, a finely sculpted tooth (known as a crown) is then fitted to the implanted titanium root.
